I really like my DSLR and would never go back to a compact camera. DSLR cameras have so many advantages. First of all, you can see what you're taking through a real viewfinder. Being able to change lenses, to hold the camera steady and to feel it in your hands makes using a DSLR a pure joy.

I've tried so many bags until I found one that I really like: Tamrac 5788 Evolution. This is my go to bag for travel and hiking.

Although not very stylish, this bag is so nicely made. The quality is great and the zippers slide easily (big deal for me). It has two different compartments: one for the camera and lenses and one for other items, such as snacks or even a light jacket.

The best thing about this camera bag: it provides three-way access to the gear and it can also be used as a backpack or as a sling bag. Need to change the lens quickly? No problem, just slide the bag and grab the lens. No need to put the bag on the ground. I love this feature.

Here are a few pros and cons.

Pros:

– It's very well-made and roomy

– Well padded – keeps my equipment protected

– Converts from backpack to sling very easy for quick gear access

– It's very comfortable and does not throw off your center of balance

– You can easily attach a tripod

Cons:

– It's pretty heavy on its own

– I wish it was a little more stylish. It does scream camera from a distance.

– No room for a water bottle. I guess you can put a small one in the top compartment but I prefer using it for other things.

– It's a little expensive for a backpack

This bag is for serious amateur photographers and hobbyists who like bringing the camera with them most of the time when they travel. I would not say that professional photographers would be satisfied with this bag. I know they like to carry way more equipment. A camera body with three lenses and a flash would probably not be enough for them.

Keep in mind, this is a pretty heavy and big camera bag. If you are looking for camera bag that only holds a DSLR with 1 or 2 lenses, there are other options.

There are two basic film types, negative and transparency (slide / reversal). One of the advantages that most color and black and white negative film has is that the range of exposure latitude is far greater than that of slide film.

Black and white negative film has a greater degree of contrast latitude than both color film and transparency. Latitude in both color and black and white film is greater in overexposure, allowing as much as 2-3 stops, while still providing acceptable results. Color slide has much less latitude than most negative film, so you there before must be more precise in your exposures. If anything below under-exposure would be preferred to overexposing slide film. Color faults can not be as easily fixed as with negative film, that's why correct exposure is so important when shooting this film.

The advantages of slide film are the color saturation and the fine grain of the film. I enter a main hall, magnificent in size but reduced in space by the hordes of people hovering around one small picture. The people are barricaded, forced to be distant from this one precious image, shielded behind glass. La Gioconda, known as the Mona Lisa, is famous for her enigmatic, billion-dollar smile.

I am tantalised by her smile but after a brief glimpse, I am forced aside by the horde waiting to be photographed with this priceless work of art acting merely as background. Long sticks protrude from the crowd, like alien insect antennas seeking food or light, carrying their image catcher atop. Any prop is used to get above the crowd for the closest picture possible. In front of the enigmatic smile, mysterious for centuries, the hordes from every part of the planet grin with gaping maws, wave, high five, peace sign and hang loose – reverence long gone in the search for cinematic permanence.

I notice that most of the paintings in the Louvre have subjects that, like the Mona Lisa, either are unsmiling or have only a pleasant turn of the lip. No big grins, no wide toothy smiles. In my early art training, I was taught never to paint a wide smile, and painting teeth was just wrong. If we view photography as an extension of art, painting portraits becomes photography people. Seeing the masses with every type of camera and every pose, I ask myself 'Why do we smile for the camera these days?' When did that start to happen? I want to convince you that under no circumstances should you smile for a camera.

Painted portraits of the day were composed and dignified and mostly of aristocracy – a vast majority of portraits in this category are deemed 'great'.

Reasons for not smiling could have been:

1. The subject of the painting had to sit for long periods of time so holding a pose was impossible. The artists' expression was, 'Say prune!'

2. Bad dental hygiene and consequent lack of confidence in smiling

3. Maybe they were just not happy!

In 1980 , the Nikon F3 was the first 35mm SLR with a viewfinder liquid crystal digital data display (LCD). This showed little more than shutter speed information, but it started a design trend that actually all SLRs adopted in some form.

German company Rolleiflex was the first of several companies (including Yashica's Samurai, and Ricoh's Mirai later in the 1980s) that attempted – and failed – to introduce an alternative camera shape with their now forgotten SL 2000 F. Let's just say it did not prove popular. In the same year ( 1981 ), Pentax marketed the ME F : a heavily modified ME Super that was the first 35mm SLR with built-in auto-focus. This used a passive contrast detection system, which worked poorly, and was a commercial flop.

Sigma was more successful, and produced a 21-35mm f / 3.5-4 zoom lens: the first super-wide angle zoom lens for SLRs. I'm not going to address the technicalities, other than to say that computer-aided design made possible something previously thought to be impossible.

On to 1982 , and Ricoh 's XR-S was the first solar-powered SLR. It was another unsuccessful idea.

1983 proved to be a better year. The Pentax Super A was the first SLR with external LCD data display.

One of several leaps forward came in the shape of two new, and highly sophisticated metering systems. Nikon ' s FA was the first camera with multi-segregated metering (also know as matrix metering), which used an on-board microprocessor to analyze light levels in five different segments of the field of view, and determine the best compromise exposure. For the time, it was so advanced the buying public did not take to the camera; they neither understand how it worked, not trusted its accuracy, but Matrix meters became standard in 35 mm SLRs by 1990, and digital cameras that followed – where this system is more commonly known as evaluative metering.

At the other end of the metering spectrum, Olympus produced the OM-4 : the first camera with built-in multiple spot-meter, which could measure eight individual spots and average them for precipitate exposure in difficult lighting situations.

Still in 1983 , Minolta scored the biggest hit when they launched the Alpha 7000 , which became the first commercially successful auto-focus 35 mm SLR, and ultimately inserted fully automated film handling (auto-load, wind, rewind and film speed setting). This camera was revolutionary, and its auto-focus innovations permanently changed 35mm SLR design. Other manufacturers were either forced to get on-board with auto-focus, or withdrew from the 35mm SLR arena (eg Mamiya, Fujica, Chinon). The Alpha 7000 started Minolta on the path to become (briefly) the number one camera manufacturer. However, as is often the way, before too long Minolta suffered a reversal of fortunes, were forced to merge with Konica, and finally stopped making cameras in 2006.

The next innovation came in 1987 , when Pentax bought us the SFX , which was the first interchangeable lens SLR with a built-in electronic flash coupled with through-the-lens (TTL) auto-exposure. In a short space of time, built-in TTL auto-flashes become standard on all but the most expensive 35 mm SLR cameras.

Meanwhile Canon gave us the EOS 650 and 620 , which used a new EF mount lens mount. This was the first all-electronic contact camera lens mount. Previously, camera-to-lens links had been mainly mechanical, but auto-focus required data exchange between camera and lens, and so the lens mount effectively became a computer data port.

The next year (1988) Minolta 's Maxxum 7000i featured the first multi-sensor auto-focus SLR. While first generation auto-focus SLRs had a single central focus sensor, the Maxxum 7000i used an H pattern array of sensors to cope with focusing on off-center subjects. This set the trend of growing numbers of auto-focus sensors.

By the end of the 1980s, most commercially successful cameras bristled with technology, and did all the thinking for the photographer. Point and shoot photography had become the order of the day.

Come 1991, it was ironically the company who had given birth to the popularization of film photography that began its demise. Kodak Digital Camera Systems heavily modified a Nikon F3 to produce the first digital SLR camera. It was ridiculously expensive (and stupidly large), but it marked the beginning of the next generation of cameras, and the move away from film photography.

1992 Witnessed one radically new (as in different) 35mm SLR camera. The Nikonon RS was the first waterproof 35 mm SLR made for use in underwater diving. It had auto-focus, auto-exposure, TTL auto-flash, interchangeable lenses and good accessories; all the features we had come to expect in a camera. But the Nikonos RS was not about to change the face of film photography. The era was over, and more manufacturers either went to the wall (eg Yashica and Ricoh), or evolved to compete in the digital market.
